How long does the background check take?

How long does the background check take? We hear this question often, unfortunately, it's not always the easiest to answer. Every company may run a different set of checks and each check's information is gathered differently. Most checks are returned within 4-10 business days.

If your check includes Education, Employment or Reference Verifications, this can delay the check as we are waiting on a 3rd party to verify the information.

To help get faster turnaround times, fill out the Vetty information correctly as soon as you receive the "Get Started" email.  You can use your Vetty Verified profile to track your progress, view what checks are being run and submit any additional information needed.

Once the information is filled out, we receive the information for the Social Security number trace, National Criminal Database, Sex Offender Registry and Terrorist Watchlist within 30 minutes. The County Criminal Check depends on the counties you have lived in within the past 7-10 years. This information can come back within 1 day to over a month. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, there have been courthouses that were closed and are now very behind on returning files to background check vendors. You can view a list of known court delays here.

It is also possible that we are waiting for a past employer or your educational institution to get back to us and confirm your employment or education. You can assist us by emailing support@vetty.co with any supporting documentation like a transcript or previous company W2.
