What type of information is included in a background check?

So, you’ve been asked to complete a background check. No need to worry, we keep things transparent around here. You can always see exactly what’s being checked by logging into your Vetty account and reviewing the list of screenings tied to your report.

Each employer can request a slightly different mix of screenings, but here’s a look at the most common ones you might see:

  • Identification Check: Confirms your ID (like your passport or driver’s license) is valid and that your selfie matches the photo on file.
  • Social Security Number Trace: Validates your SSN and shows any alias names linked to you. This also pulls your address history, helping Vetty know which counties to search for records.
  • Sex Offender Registry Search: Checks whether you appear on any national sex offender registries.
  • Global Sanctions and Watchlist: Searches across multiple international lists (including Office of Foreign Assets Control lists) to confirm you’re not flagged on any government watchlists or sanctions lists.
  • Criminal Records Search: Covers County, Federal, and National databases to identify any criminal convictions.
  • Driving Records Check (MVR):

Verifies your license status, expiration date, and any reported tickets, infractions, or suspensions.

  • Education Verification: Vetty contacts your school directly to confirm your major, attendance dates, graduation status, and degrees earned.
  • Employment History: We reach out to your previous employers to confirm your job titles, dates of employment, and other key details.
  • Drug Testing: If your background check includes drug testing, Vetty will schedule an appointment at a nearby lab. The specific substances tested can vary by employer, so if you’re curious, reach out to them for the details.

There are also a few specialized searches that some employers request, depending on the role or industry. If you want to see the full menu of possible screenings and what they mean, check it out here
